The tragedy of poverty ! Five small creatures were recently brought before the N. Melb. police-court as neglected children, Ages from 2 to 13 and scarcely sufficient clothing amongst them for one. The eldest — a girl — hugged her sliiveriDg baby brother to her breast : — " We were living in Arden street, N. Melb. Mother's been in the madhouse for along time, and I've had to look after my brothers and sisters. On Tuesday we were put out because father, who is a piano-tuner, cquld not pay the rent. Father got a van and put us and the bit of furniture iv it, and we were driven towards spencer street, Father left the van and after a bit came baok with some food. Then he left us again, and we waited, and waited, and waited, bub he never came back— and we've got no friends and no relations."
