On clit that Mr J, Rutherford County Councillor for the MaUu RidiDg intends to come forward against Mr Allen ia the Liberal interest. Mr R. Glendinning, who has recently purchased the Burnweil Colliery, took possession on Wednesday. We understand that the mine will be in full working order shortly. It is noticeable that J's.P. in Mr Stratford's district are busily engaged every month doing a considerable portion of that gentleman'a work. Mr Stratford is evidently wiser in his generation than most paid magistrates who carry out the duties they are paid to perform. The Justice Department is apparently effete. Altogether, Maclean and Co's local agent has bought up, during the last three weeks, about 5,000 sacks of wheat. This includes a line of some 500 bags of prime Tuscan from Tuapeka West. We understand that some of the wheat was for millets, but the bulk of the purchase will be shipped Home. The nomination of councillors for the Borough of Milton took place on Tuesday. The following gentlemen being the only candidates were declared duly elected for the ensuing term : — South Ward : Arthur Littlejohn, proposed by Mr W Moore socuoded by T. J. Grant ; East Ward : Henry Sprosen, proposed by G. C. Graham, seconded by Jas. Kennard ; West Ward : A. E. Stewart proposed by W. Walkor econded by D M'Gill. A rather amusing state of affairs has cropped up over the 'question of river pollution by mining, Two cases will come before the Supreme Court this month, i.e., the pollution of the Tokomairiro and Waikaka rivers. In the Toko, cass Mr Sim appears for the miners and Mr M'Gregor for the farmers. But in the Waikaka case both legal gentlemen take a wonderful mental somersault for Mr M'Gregor appears for the miners an 1 Mr Sim for the farmers. Law is a good thing — tor the lawyers ! The weekly parade of the Bruce Rifles was held on Wednesday evening, the parade state being, 1 captain, 'A lieutenants, 4 sergeants, 29 rank and file, total 36 ; it would have been much stronger had it not been for counter attractions at which several members were engaged. The oompany was put through advance and rear guard formation by Captain Stewart and Lieutenant Johnstone, on the street, after which the company returned to the Drill Hall. After parade a meeting of officers and non-coms, was held, and arrangements completed for volley-firing to take place this month. It was decided to hold a Smoke Concert* on ljjrida.y 15th imfc. and arrangements in connection therewith were completed. One new member was proposed, bringing the strength of the company up to 56. Sargeant-Major Towler who was present, instructed the, r.epruits (XI) in elementary 4riU.

On Monday evening Mr George M'Leod, porter at Milton Railway Station, who has been transferred to Abbotsford, was presented with a handsome travelling bag by the local Btaff. : The Adams Flat dredge has not yet started operations, owing to the ladder nojjfe working effectively. As soon as the Blight defect is remedied, the contractors will hand the dredge over to the Company, and she will start working forthwith^ Hastings must be a grand town for bankruptp. - A late * Gazette ' contains 15 bankruptcies to come before the Supreme Court this month. Are there no fires or rats in Hastings now ? Although the County elections are not 3 r et, reports are current that the following gentlemen intend coming forward against the sitting members : Waihola, Messrs Scott and Hilgendorf ; Tokomairiro, G. Martin ; Matau, Mr W. Mosley, Glenledi, Mr Featherstone. On Tuesday night the farmers residing on the hills round about Milton seemed to have simultaneously begun the usual spring burning of gorse, tussocks, and ferns, for the hills all rouud the plain were more or less on fire. Conspicuous among these was afire on the Narrow Dale hills, above Mr G. Lindsay's, which produced some very beautiful effects which lit up the sky. Mr William Baird, a contractor in a large way at Invercargill, visited Milton this week with a view to purchasing some good draught horses. However draughts are evideutly as scarce in Milton as elsewhere, for we are inforned that although Mr Baird intended to take home at least a dozen horses, and was willing to give any fair price, he only succeeded in purchasing five horses in this district. A petition, which we understand originated with the Messrs Sutherland, h being circulated in the Mount Stuart district, asking that the Mount Stuart Road Board may be merged into the County. The petition, it is said, is being extensively signed. Those who oppose the petition say it is all over a dam site — no swear word intended — through which the Messrs Sutherland have come into conflict with the Mount Stuart Road Board. Funny advertisements are insetted sometimes. Here is a sample culled from a Dunedin contemporary : " Lady, practically experienced, affectionate, wishes correspond gentleman, view Matrimony ; widower no objection ; country preferred. — Virgo, 'Times' office." What is a "practically experienced " lady anyhow 1 If the advertiser had nob given herself out as Virgo, one might naturally have considered that a " lady practically experienced " was a lady with a past — a second Mrs Tanqueray. Perhapg Virgo is the newest kind oykw Woman. The proposed erection of a bridge . near Kiitangata over the Matau river came before the Bruce County Council on Tuesday. Since the previous meeting several of the councillors have approached the ratepayers in the various ridinga, and found that the feeling generally was against tha raising of a County loan for the work. Consequently it was agreed that libtle benefit would be derivable from the holding of meetags in the different ridings to consider the subject. The estimated cost of the structure is about £2000. The Government have already granted £500 towards expenditure ; aod an effort is being put foPI, to secure a further Government grant of £500. Should this be obtainable, tho Kaitangata Borough Council will find onethird of the remaining £1000 ; and the balance— two-thirda of £1000— will be raised by the County Council striking a small special rate over the whole County. It is thought that by means of a small special rate the County Council's proportion of the cost will be forthcoming within two yea r s.
