WHERE THE CURFEW TOLLS.

There are not many places where the Curfew bell is still tolled every night, but the old Cinque port of Sandwich iB one of these few. From the tall Dutch tower of St. Peter's church rings the bell every night as it has rung each sunset for the last seven hundred years — a record quite unsurpassed. The sexton receives £20 a year for performing this service. In 1833 the corporation di6cusßed the ad risability of doing away with the custom and Baying the £20, which is quite an amount in a small town like Sandwich. Sentimental considerations, however, prevailed and the nightly bell has rung out over the sandy flats without protest till recent years, when again the discussion arose, but at last accounts the curfew is still tolling from the tower.
