The incident threatens a conflict between the military and civil powers. President M'Kinley has given hia approval to a proposal made by the Freemasons of Virginia to invite the Prince of Wales to attend the centenary of Washington's death. The London County Council refused to permit Sunday concerts at music and other halls for private gain, drawing a distinction between voluntary and commercial enterprise. The decision stops the Queen's Hall and similar classical concerts. The Sultan telegraphed to the Czar entreating him to relinquish his support to the appointment of Prince George of Greece as Governor of Crete. The Powers have formally appointed Prince George for a period of three years. The ceremony of formal appointment will be performed in Athens. The appointment is received with jubilations in Crete.
