Apples as Appetisers. — Apples — whether fresh or preserved— have a^fine tonic effect on the Btomach ; oue good apple usually giving a keen appetite in about ten minutes. Eat, therefore, two or three good-sized apples at every meal. B- using the fruit largely, one's physical powers of endurance under labour, either mental or physical, are very much increased, and flesh is gained. T'ds may. be attributed chiefly to the fact vthat apples assist the digestion and assimilation "of foods of other kinds. Besides, every chemist records that apples contains a larger percentage of nitrates and phosphates (food for the brain and muscle) than any other fruit. ♦-♦-♦ Eggt Medicine.-- A mustard plaster made with the white of an egg will not leave a blister. A raw egg takevi immediately will carry down a fish-bone that cannot be got up from the throat. The white skin that lines the shell is a useful application for a boil. The white, beaten with loaf sugar and lemon juice, relieves hoarseness — a teaspoonful taken once an hour. An egg added to the morning cup of coffee makes a good tonic. A raw unbroken yolk in a glass of wine is good for convalescents. e-** Valuable Embrocation. — The cost of making this up is small, but it ia excellent for nprains, sore throats, and rheumatism. The mixture will keep for years, and is improved by the addition of a small lump of camphor. «-»~# & Goon Wike. — The following old recipe for the choice of a wife seems a very good one : — As much of beauty as preserves affection, Of modest diffidence as claims protection, A docile mind subservient, to correction, A temper led by reason and reflection, And every passion kept in due subjection ; Just faults enough to keep her from perfection.
