Granted. — We understand that the two Milton members of the Brace Licensing Committee have granted the application for a conditional licenae for the Farmers' Club Show next week. Tennis. —A team of players from the Milton Tennis Club will journey to Dunedin on Sa urday to play a match against the Ex- High School Club. The following will represent Milton : — Misses Anderson, Lane, Taylor, Dr Sutherland, Messrs Petrie, Blackburn, Lockhart, and Stewart. Passed on. -General regret will be felt through this district at the news of the death of Mr William Wain, of Glenore. The deceased, who had been licensee of the Victoria Hotel, as well as storekeeper and I postmaster for a number of years, had been ailing for some time, so that the end was not altogether unexpected. He leaves a i widow and a young family to mourn his loss. Charitable Aid. —A meeting of represen- ! tatives from Bruce County and Milton Borough Councils was held in the Council j ( hambers on Wednesday for the purpose of ! electing a representative on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, Mr A. Nelson j occupied the chair, Messrs Noble and Murray representing the County and Mr D. Reid the Borough. It was resolved that Mr 1 Henry Clark be elected to represent them on the two bodies named. I Railway Traffic. — The railway traffic during the paat week has be*n unuaually heavy, more thau the ordinary number of excursionists having availed themselves of the cheap trips to visit Dunedin. The officials of the various branches of the department have been kept very busy, but they have proved themselves quite capable of carrying out their heary duties. The railways appear to he getting more popular aa time got a on under present management. Thic Band.— The Milton Brass Band intend holding a sale of gifts in the Skating Rink on Tuesday next in aid of the fund for the purchase of new instruments. A large quantity of goods, both useful and ornamental, bave been promised, and there will no doubt be plenty of buyers In addition to this there will be the uaual side shows incidental to a bazaar, so that there should be plenty of amusement for every tn. e. We understand that Mr James Allen, M. H. R., has signified his intention of being present. We anticipate seeing a large crowd of people present. Convic ed. — At the Lawrence Police Court on Tuesday before Mr Hawkins S.M. John M'lntosh, a ploughman in the employ of Charles Moulin, a pleaded guilty to working a horse engaged in harrowing when it had two large open sores on its shoulders under ita collar. The defendant was fined 20s and costs (21s 6d). Charles Ewen, a ploughman in the employ of James Smith and Son, of Greenfield station, was also charged with working a horse in a team harnessed to a grubber when it had a large open sore on its shoulder under the collar. The defendant pleaded not guilty, and evidence was given by Inspector Aiken and Constable West, of Waitahuna, for the prosecution, and by the defendant, John B. Smith (the owner), and William Jenkins (Mr Smith's farm manager) for the defence ; after which the information was dismissed by the magistrate.
J. Bates. — We are very sorry to hava to> report that Mr J. Bates, bricklayer, having met with a slight aooident it was deemed necessary to take him to the Danedin Hospital. A Gift. — To mark the initiation of the new direct produce Bervice the Victorian Government have sent 500 carcases of mutton by the Gulf of Siam to the Mayor of Manchester to distribute among the poor of that city. Show Privileges. — Messrs J. A. Duthie and Co. sold tbe privileges in oonneotion with the Tokomairiro Farmers' Club Show on Tuesday, the publican's booth being poxchased by Mr F. Grant for £5, and the refreshment booth by Mr Thomas Bewley for £1 10 a. Dr S. F. Scott, Blae Ridge, Harrison Co., i Mo., says : " For whooping cough Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is excellent."
