(From Our Own Corresfondknt.) Thursday. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers on Wedneßday last. Present : The Mayor (W. M. Shore), Crß Wilson, Hitchon, Bayley, Kerr, and Kirby. The minutes of the former meeting were read and adopted. Two of the new councillors having signed the customary declaration took their Beats. The Mayor in a few introductory remarks welcomed the new councillors. The following correspondence waa received : — A memo from Mr D. Reid (Milton) enclosing deeds of the three reserves, — A letter from Mr D. Stewart (Clutha) enclosing copy of a lease to be sealed with Borough atatup. Agreed to. — A memo from Ballance Memorial Committee asking for return of subscription list. Ordered to be attended to.— Balance eheet of Charitable Aid and Otago Hospital Board Ordered to lie on the table for perusal by membere. — Telegram from Mr Allen, M.H.R., informing board that the Kaitangata Cem-tery Bill had passed the Lower House, and that he bad iostruoted Mr Downie Stewart to take charge of it in the Upper House. — The Mayor then gave a report of the proceedings of Arbor Day and a description of the work done. —A letter waß read from Mr J. Welsh, asking for a new footbridge. Referred to the Works Committee. — Mr Jordan (Manager of Castle Hill Company) wrote asking the Council to form the street leading np to their brickyard. Referred to Worka Committee to report at next meeting. Cr Wilson moved : " That Gr Muir's name be added to the Works Committee." Seconded by Cr Kerr, and agreed to. It was moved by Or Wilson, "That the Mayor, Crs Hitchon and Kirby be appointed to the Finance Committee." — Seconded by Cr Kerr, and oarried. The Mayor, Cr Hitohon, and the treasnrer were appointed to aign the borough ohequesj &c. The following accounts were then presented for payment :— T. and J. Carson, £14 4* ; T. Carson, £8 9a ; T. Wilson, £1 14 i lid; F. Fuell, £10 16a lOd ; W. Bradley, £7 4s ; W. Carson, 17s 6d ; W. Bradley, £1 15s j W. Hewitt, £1 12s 9d ; W. Carson, £1 ss ; « Free Preas,' £3 153.— 1t was moved by Cr Bayley, and seconded by Cr Kerr, that the accounts be passed for payment.— Agreed to. Cr Hitchon moved, " That fresh tenders be called for the Borough advertisements," — Seconded by Cr Bayley, and oarried. For contract No. 102 only one tender waa received.— Cr Wilson moved, "That the tender be not opened but lie in abeyance for ■-> a time.— Seoonded by Cr Bayley, and oar ried. It was moved, " That the olerk ' be in* struoted to make enquiries as to the advisability of making a road up to the Kaitangata Company's pit."— Agreed to. A short meeting of the cemetery and domain boards was held afterwards,- Jbut no business of any importance was transacted. ODDFELLOWS. The nsual fortnightly meeting of the above waß held in M'Govern'a Hall on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m., N.G. Bro. Fople presiding. Five new members were initiated, and seven new members were proposed and seconded* Dr Fitzgerald was appointed lodge doctor, and Mr Hutchins chemist to the lodge. The ■ receipts for the evening amounted to £4 10 a. After business the lodge went into harmony for a ehort time, and then closed with the usual formalities. PHONOGRAPH. Thiß latest and most wonderful invention of. Edison's was exhibited to a very large audience in MGovern's Hall on Tuesday evening. Mr Leyden in hi? introduction fully explained the working of the mechanism to his audienoe. The selections given afterwards were well received and heartily applauded. The selections by the United States marine band deserve special mention if anything. I must not forget to mention —. that during the interval one of our best singers, Mr G. Aitcheson, Bang into the instrument and the song was repeated ro the audienoe amidst loud . applause. At the conclusion of the entertainment several of the audience went on the stage to have a private hearing. MARRIAGE. A most pleasing ceremony took place here last Thursday, 21st inst , namely the marriage of Miss Elizibeth Hitohon, aeoond daughter of the late H. S. Hitohon, Esq., of Adams Fiat, to Mr Frank Beckingale, of Dunedia. The oeremony took place at the residence of the bride's brother, Mr Harry Hitohon, and was performed by the Rev. R. Fairmaid. The / bride's sister, Miss Mary Hitchon, aoted as bridesmaid, while Mr Thomas Mayer filled the post of best man. The bride, who was very riohly dressed, wore a handsome gold bracelet, the gift of. the bridegroom. The . wedding breakfast was attended by about forty of the bride and bridegroom's relations. The "happy pair" left by the afternoon train for Hawera in the Taraaaki district, North Island. The newly wedded couple received some very handsome presents, numbering about fifty in all. Among them I noticed a stylish drawing-room suite, also a very antique silver tea set and a massive silver teapot, besides many other pretty nicknaoks too numerous to mention, not to speak of a good few cheques Bend as presents, which are fast beooming very fashionable gifts. Slay every good wish be theirs. JOTTINGS. I nottoe tenders are being called for a Presbyterian ohurch at Wangaloa, which speaks volumes for the people over, there. Mr Nieman wishes me to contradict a rumor that some unscrupulous person hai been circulating to the effect that he is leaving Kaitangata shortly. .He wishes me to state that suoh ia not the oaae. Several gentlemen have already intimated to me their willingness to become members of a cricket club if one is formed, and I Bhall be pleased to receive at onoethe names of any others who may wish to join, so aa to get things started, •_, I notice Mr Hitohon has boen getting his ) premises thoroughly renovated outside,, and the work has been entrusted to Mr Camp' bell, who, with his usual ability, has turned out a splendid job.. The Caledonian Society hold tbeir annual meeting very shortly, and it is to be hoped a little more energy than usual will be dis* played by the public in carrying out this* yearly institution. The New Masonic Hall is goiDg tip fast and beginning to show some shape already. The roads are in grand condition, and the farmers are as busy aB bees trying to make up for lost time.
