FOOTBALL

(Br Three- Quarter.) GREEN ISLAND V MILTON. The match between these two claba came off on the ground of the former at Abbotßford on Saturday last, before a good 4 crowd of spectator*. The Milton team j mrneyed by the morn'mg train, and on their arrival were conducted to Houlaton's Hotel, and after a look round the plaoe sat down to dinner, kindly supplied by the Green Inland Club. On proceeding to the ground a difficulty arose over the question of a referee, both teama being provided with an tfibal and neither Bhowing any inclination to give way on the point. After a long argument between the two oaptains the Milton team were called off the field, bat their opponents, seeing they were bo determined, at length gave way, and the game was started about half piat two with Mr Andrew Parlane as referee, when the following teama lined out : — ° Green Island : Backs, R. Kerr, C. Brown, J. Davidson (capt), Muir, A. Waugh, T. Thompson ; forwards, D. Davidson, Kerr (2), Canning, W. Brown, Moreland (2), Irvine, • Fieemani -. Milton i Backs, A. Br/ce, W. M'Donald (oapt), C. Grant, C. Diaper, T. Grant, T, M'Callum ; forwards, C. Maloney, W. M'Liohlan, B. Tanaley, W. Heads, J. 0. . M'Donald, H. Coombe, J. Burn, J. M'Murtrie, A. Dickson. Davidson won the toss and Tanßley kicked off for Milton, who played up the hill for the first spell. Play remained near the eentrjj^^. for some time, tight scrums, oooasionally relieved by kicks into touch, being the order of the day. The ball waa gradually worked down near Milton's line, but the Greens wore prevented from ecortng by the smart play of ths visitors' backs, and finally M'Donald got possession, and after a good rui kicked into touoh near the half way fl ig. After this a loose rash of the Milton forwards ' carried the play into Green Island territory . but good kicking by their full bick relieved the pressure and play was again shifted ta the viaitoru' end. Their defence, however, was very stubborn, and again and again all the Green Island efforts to score were neutralised. Fur off side play on the part of one of the Milton players Green' Island was awarded a free kick near the twenty-five flag but the kiok at goil was resultless, and M'Donald obtaining possession made a good run up the field, ending by kicking into touch. Once more, however, the Milton goal was invaded and the ball was carried into touoh about ten yards from their line, And here eneued the best run of the day, in fact a better has not been seen for Borne time, M'Lachlan obtained possession from the - throw in and eluding the opposing backs ran the whole length of the field and Bcored for the visitor.?. An appeal waa made for an infringement after the try had been obtained but it was ruled to be too late. Tansley'o kick at goal though a good attempt did aot enhano9 the soore. From this to half tima the game was very ev£O, the ball travelling rapidly up and down the field, without; much advantage on either side. The Green Island captain at this stage refused to proceed wich the game unless another referee was substituted for Mr Parlane, whose decision in the case of the try by Milton did not mest with the ap< proval of his team, though they admitted he ' was fair enough except in that particular instance. Ultimately, to cave further bother, the Milton captain agreed to a o ange being made and Mr J. D anoin oon« trolled the game daring theseo3nd half.Having more than held their own in the . first spell it was thought that the Visitors, with the advantage of playing down hill, would give their opponents a merry time of , is during the second half. Davidson kicked off for Green Island and after a aeries of exchanges among the b*cks play settled down at the half -way ft ig. The play for some time was of a very uainterestingdeaorip. tion, scrum following ecuoi in rapid iu>' cession. Tbe ball was gradually worked up to Milton's end of the field where M'Callum obtained possession, but was collared and pushed back over his own line by a Green . Island player, when much to the astonish' mont of the visitors the referee awarded a try to the hom9 team. No' goal resulted. About five minuted afterwards, as a result of several free kicks awarded to Green Island, play again settled in Milton's quarters, and D. Davidson was enabled to score for the home team. After the kiok out; Milton rallied and carried the ball down - to the Green's line but the pressure waa relieved and play was once more transferred to the visitors' end. A fr«3 k'ok awarded Green Island gave them a difficult shot at ; goal, but the kiok, though a good one, proved ineffectual. Shortly after this W, i Kerr got possession and scored the third try for Green [stand, J. Davidson kicking the desired goal. Time was called immediately after, leaving Green Island victors by 9 points to 2. The game oould not by any stretch of imagination bs called a good display of football, bein» marred gre *tly by the extremely rough play of the home team. Play waß confined almost entirely to the forwards, and the weight of the winners, together with .. their bullooking taotio >, proved too nmdi for their opponents, who however showed up prominently in the loose rushes. ' For tbe winners Kerr (2), Davidson and Freeman ' were the best of a very even lot, while Maloney, M'Laohlan, M'Donald, Tanßley and Coombe were most oonspiououa for the losers. ' .-'.■- la the back division the visitors were paints before the home players, thefr pasa« ing being far surer, while their opponents play in this department was of a very medioore description. Of the Green Island backs Davidson and Waugh were most prominent. M'Djnald, *at wing 'three« quarter waa undoubtedly the best back on the ground, running and kicking in splendid style. He wa3 ably supported by C Grant, though is may be said that all the backs, arid in fact the whole team, worked well _ together. '■--■■ : • The Pacific team are expeoted up at .„ Milton on Friday or Saturday to fulfil their fixture with the local'dub.
