LITIGATION OVER AN ENORMOUS FORTUNE.
The enormous inheritance brought by Buonaparte from Venice and placed in the French Treasury ia being made the subject of a suit in which a syndicate of GOO heirs-at-law are claimants. The original sum amounted in 1676 to 55,000,000 of francs (£2,240,000). Capitalised at 3 per cent., it now reaches the fabulous sum of 31,000,.-. 000,000 franca (12_,000,000). It appears that on the 16th May, 1024, Anastrasio Tripaldi made a contract with the Doge of Venice, by which he paid the State Bank the sum of 800.000 golden crowns, bearing interest afc 3 per cent. Tipaldi died in 1636, leaving Jeau Their sole heir. The latter died without having drawn the money from the b.nk. Numerous claimants to the inheritance sprang up ; but in May, 1797, when Buonaparte imposed the treaty of Milan upon Venice, he took possession of the accumulated treasure, on the ground that the real heirs were French subjects. The matter has been for year., in the form of petitions, before the French Chambers. Now the heirs, who number 600, have formed themselves into a syndicate, and have instructed counsel to prosecute their claims.
