TOKO. FARMERS' CLUB
TUB THIRTY- FIUST ANNUAL PLOUGHING MATCH
The annual ploughing ma^oh under the außpioea of the Firtnora' Club was h,H on Friday in a paddock placed at tho disposal of tho Cub by Mr John Tough. Ttio land was admirably adapted f >r the purpose, and it was Buffi :ient!y near Milton to be convenient for v : sitors. Unfortunately, however, after leaving the main road about; a quarter mile south of the town the dis'rlot road was in so Bhoeking a condition as to render travelling either behind or on horsea exceedingly uopleasaut, and for the few foot passengers who patronised the exhibition next to impossible. Notwithstanding this drawback, theattendanoe was unusually good, which may bo very much attributed to the fact that three digging ploughs wero on the ground. Of course, some few farmers still take an interest in the ol !er-f jsbiouod machines, and it may possibly be they will be In occasional use for a little longer. But these modern implements promise to very soon as effectually thrust them out as the iron ploughs did the wooden one?. In fact, these digging ploughs, which have ouly recently been introduced, embrace more improvements thaa were eff^oted in double furrows daring nearly the quarter of a century they have b«en in use in this country. And this is no exaggeration, for it was the opinion of all experts on the ground that the work done by the digging ploughs was tho height of porfecr.ion. Ejcunly we gave an account of tho excellent work they did, and it is scarcely necessary to do more now than to Bay tint tho favorable opinions then expressed by farmers were more than endorsed by those present at the match. It whs acknowledged on all bauds that the ground was thoroughly pulverised, and left very level on the top. It waa freely prophesied that before long these diggers will be in universal use, and then plnaghing matches will be a thins; of the past — and poßsibly not a bad thing either, for the fancy ploughing done at fchesa matches Is of very little practical value. We are informed that the ordinary d >üble furrows oan be easily and cheaply converted into digging nlou^ba, and thar tho firms who exhibited their machines are busily engagnd in that work.
It 13 worthy of special note that Gibson Porter, who took tho championship for the third yo.ir in snooussion, \a a youth who is not yot q lite 17 years of age. It, is dnnbrful if ever bnch a remarkable thing nconrred before in the history of ploughing matohes.
The turn-outa of boraoß and tnruesa were highly creditable to tho district, moat of the teams being splendid animals, and in exoillent condition, Mr MiiWa three-horse team, whioh aohieved the first priza, being exceptionally good.
The decisions of the Judges gava universal BatiefactioD, harmonising in every oaae with the previous opinions of all tho expert ploughmen on the ground.
