A JAPANESE SCANDAL.

There ia said to be a sinking of the heart in the male population of Japan. They have caught their wives and ; daughters in the act of sending orders |to Parisian dressmakers ; and so the fate of Japanese customs is sealed. In a few years Japan will dress like Paris or LonJon or New York. What tbe sorrowful men of Japan do not seem, to see is that it is a question of give and take. The Japanese ladies are not paying for their Parisian gowns in money but in. kind- They are sending a score of native costumes to Europe for every dream in cream lace that is despatched from Paria to them. In London the Japanese craze is being carried to such a pitch that it may soon be not at all the thing in society to wear dresses made elsewhere than at the Japanese Village. A few weeks ac[o two London theatres offered Japanese attractions, and one of them does so still; while the Drury Lane pantomime is very ' much Japanesed indeed. Here and there a shop may be seen i& Kegent Street that does not exhibit Japanese screens, beads, shoes, fans, or other goods : but five out of every six " conjurorß " hail, or say they hail, from Japan. Even our children carry Japanese dolls. Everything considered, then, the gentlemen of Japan may find some relief in the reflection that in this case action and reaction are about equal. If there is any difference, we are more afflicted with Japan in London than they are with London in Japan.
