THE REBELLION IN THE SOUDAN.

♦ . .. - (Reutbr's Telegrams.) London, January 22. An official telegram from Lord Wolseley states that on Saturday last the British column under Colonel Stewart inflicted ft complete defeat on 10,000 Mahdites occupying a position at Abnlka Wells, between Gakdul and Metemneh. Colonel Stewart leaving the camels and baggage at the camp, advanced iv square, the whole force being on foot. He outfl tnked the enemy, who charged bravely under a withering fire, aud succeeded in penetrating the le f t of the square. The British were admirably steady, and maintained a hand-to hand fight with the enemy. While the fighting was proceeding on the left, the other part of the square was firing heavily on the enetn3', who were finally repulsed, leaving 800 dead and a number of wounded. The Hussars have since occupied ' the enemy's position at Abulka, and Colonel Stewart is advancing on Metemneb. The British lost nine officers kitted, including Colonel Burnaby, and nine woundtd including Captain Viscount St. Vincent, and the Earl of Airlie ; also 65 ( men killed. Eighty-five were wounded. Colonel Stewart believes this victory will dishearten the enemy, and that future fighting will be less obstinate on their part.
