Melbourne, January 14. One case of smallpox has occurred at Hotham. The Victorian Cricket Association last night received the explanation of the Australian team regarding their refusal to play against Shaw's Eleven, and considered it not satisfactory. A resolution wan adopted, on the motion of Judge Williamß, instructing the committee appointed to select Association teams to exclude Messrs Boyle, Blackham, Bonnor, M'Donnel, Palmer, and Scott from any matches which might take place under the auspices of the Association. Sydney, January 14. In the course of a speech last night the Hon. W. B. Dalley, Attorney-general, defended the position of the Government in relation to New Guinea annexation, and said it was difficult to determine whether the impudence or the absurdity of the request that the Imperial Government should protest against German annexation waß the greater.
