Mr Murray, paper mauuf icturer, at Liverpool, New South Wales, recency gavo a picnic to his workpeople and their friends. In a speech he made ou the occasion. Mr Murray said :—" During the nine years his factory had boon in operation, 8500 tons of p iner, principally for news printing, had b en made and supplied to the leading journals in AiiHtralia ; 40,000 tons of coal had been used in tho manufacture ; £50,000 had been pain in the purchase of rags, which to a great extent was a waste article in the Colony ; £45,000 had been paid in wages ; £28,000 had been paid for railway carriage and freights, principally to Government railways ; 4500 tons of straw had been used ; and last, although not the least of Colonial production, he had trained several apprentices to the t-ade, of whom he would not be ashamed were they to be placed in the best paper naillß in Europe." In the revelations recently rmde in connection with the working of .Sing .Sing Prison, the well-known New York penal establishment, Mr Charles Roade, or other of our realistic novelists, may (says a London paper) discover abundant material for their pena. Theodore Burnett, formerly a convict at Sing Sing, has jnst testified before a legislative committee at Now Yurie to the shocking barbarities practised in tho pris<tn. Fie gave the names of men whn, he affirmed, had died or been driven insine by o»erwork and cruelty. Another witness, Arthur A. Heesler, testified to Bimilar outrages, and declared that Keeper Ilaugerty once sent him a live rat, which he greedily devoured, so near starvation was he. Ex-keeper Campb.il], who had been discharged from his position in the Clinton Prison, told equally horrible stories. Dr Martin A. M'Q-overn testified to a disgraceful state of things in the medical department of Sine Sing. As might naturally be expected, these disclosures have excited much popular indignation in the United States.
