STUDYING ECONOMY IS ALL THE GO.
{To the Editor). Sir, — The above is the case with the Mount Stuart Eoad Bo u\:!, but they go according to the old proverb — " Pe-iny-vvise and pound fo >lish." More's the pii-y that it should be practiced by the above-named Board, to the injury of many. As regards a piece of road which was ploughed up by Mr Walter Miller, and has been almost impassable through the whole of the winter. 1 have been informed by the Clerk to the .Board that, the dry weather having put a crust on the surface, they have come to the conclusion of putting a few barrow loads of dirt over the top of it, in anticipation of a dry winter, aud that this will make the road sum ciontly high and dry. Weil, Sir, it will soon be time for us to go down on our kuees and pray for a dry winter, so as to be able to go through the mud ; to avoid which the Mount Stuart R ad Board are going to spend a few pence. But, should the winter turn out wet, we must be like the wine virgins, and trim our lamps ready for to stay on vhis side of Jordan. This will not be very pleasant, but we shall be able to sing, nevertheless, "Home, sweet home, there is no place like home ! " Please bear in mind that the road I am speaking of is an important one ; it leads to Mount Stuart, aid the settlers' homes in general, and has been ia use ever since the diggings broke out. I have always believed that one white shilling is as good as another, but this rule does not appear to staul good with the Mount Stuart R >ad B >ard. They do noli seem to be particular about laying out from £80 to £100 in the formation of a road to benefit one individual, and yet the road I am speaking of might be put in repair for about £10.— Yours, &c, A Batjjpaykk.
