TOKOMAIRIRO ROAD BOARD.
m> The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held last Friday evening, when the following Members were present : — Mr G. Lindsay, (Chairman), Messrs Murray, Grey, Sutherland, Tweedie, Wisely, Fraeer. Watt, and Allison. The minutes of last monthly meeting, and those of a special one wero read by th© Clerk. Mr Murray explained that Mr Watson was prevented by the late flood* from reaching Milton in time for their regular meeting, in order to get payment of balance of contract. After hia arrival next day he produced the Engineer's certificate for tho satisfactory completion of the work done, and it was thought advisable by the Chairman to get a few of the members to attend for a short time, to pass the account fo.* payment, in order not to put Mr Watson to any inconvenience. After this explanation, Mr Tweedie moved — "That the action of the Chairman be approved of," which was seconded by Mr Watt and carried. The minutes were then confirmed. A letter was read from ihe Clerk of tho Glenledi Road Board, asking the consent of thia Board for making a certain road in their district, which would give an outlet to a number of Glenledi settlers to the various roads, as shewn on a sketch plan attached. The Clerk himself, (Mr T. Brookes), was in attendance, in order to give all necessary information. A lengthy' discussion ensued, and the Board finally decided not to give a formal consent, but simply to pledge themselves in no way to interfere with the work in contemplation; this virtually amounted to a silent approval, and Mr Brookes retired. An account from Mr W. Dunn was handed in for 2330 yards of atone, taken out of hia quarry for road metal, and for which the Board was under agreement to pay 8d per yard. As tbe price charged was 9d per yard, the amount was reduoed to that rate, and £77 13s 4d passed for payment. A faith- r amount for clearing out quarry was objected to, and allowed to atand over. Wages due to D. M'Donald for fillisc- in ruts were ordered to be paid. Mr Murray moved, and Mr Grey seconded — "That this Board dispense with their next ordinary meeting, and hold annual meeting as prescribed, on tho third Wednesday In August." Agreed to. The Clerk waß instructed to prepare the usual estimates for all works needed in the district during the ensuing year, ready for next meeting and preparatory to striking a rate. Mr Allison called the attention of the Board to the defective state of certain culverts in the Southbridge sub-division, and pointed out the necessity of having an Inspector of Works, who should receive a percentage on all the monies spent. The opinions of the members were greatly divided on this subject, and the diacus-ion ended by Mr Alliaon giving notice of motion for the next regular meeting, for consideration of the appointment of an Inspector. This finished the routine business of the evening, and the Chairman having intimated that tho Board desired to sit in Committee on certain private business, our Reporter retired.
