mended by the meeting ava fit and pro pi- r person 1 0 represent our worthy minister in his absemie. Mr Newsham having acted in a similar capacity before, the office will not be strange to him. v ; The services have been— as regards attendance—quite a success. The thanka of the congregation are dv« ioV Mrs Newsbam. who has bo kindijr lent hW harmonium, played and led the singing. A. deputation from the Ferry interviewed the mauager of of the Otago Railways ou the 4th inst, re the formation of a siding on the Titri Station. The interview was satisfactory to the deputationists, the manager promising on behalf of the Government to form the siding if the settlers of Taieri Ferry and Taieri Beach would undertake to cut a canal from the river to the siding for the beach traffic. This the deputation on behalf of the settlers agreed to do. Mr Armstrong, Government Engineer, came out by appointment on the Bth instant, to view the locality, and devise with the Committee, the best route for the canal. Since then tenders have been called for the work, and one accepted at £8 per chain. The work is to be commenced on the 20th inst, and completed within four weeks from that date. The canal will be about four and a half chains long, costing the. district about £36. Besides the canal there is three chains of road to be formed, which has also been let at £1 ids per chain, making a total of over £40, which is being raised by subscription. 1 believe this is the only siding on the line where the sett! era have been obliged to put their hands in their pocketß to find .a part of the in order to get the same accommodation as other localitiee, for the transit of produce, etc., per railway. It is a great boon to the public the trains stopping as they do now to put down or pick up passengers at the litri. The tides have been high lately, flooding the low land frbm the Bridge to Narrows, rendering the paddocks almost useless for grazing purposes this winter. The overflow might in a great measure be averted by the ■. judicious expenditure of a few pounds on the part of the Waihola Road Board, in raising the lower portions of the road down the bank of the river. The farmers here are anxiously waiting for the threshing mill ; it is very late this year in making its appearance, owing, I suppose, to the generally late harvest. The thrashing on the Henley estate is nearly over, and will be finished by the end of next week. The Taieri bridge is in a very bad state of ; repair. T should not be surprised any day ho < hear that a waggon or a mob of cattle tried to test the depth of the river involuntarily i by passing through the rotten planks. The tollhouse is unoccupied at present, though I hear the County Council are prepared to let itj -should a suitable tenant, with a months' rent in his hand, apply for it. .•:_-■ ■--" ; The 1 weather has- been; anything but delightful for the last week, > blowing a gale from "the south-west, snowing and raining by turns, varying its little pleasantries by doing all three at {one and the same time: .This morning (Saturday), there is more snow on the road— about three inches— than I hare - seen since my arrival in Otago. My friend opposite— Mungatua — looks beautiful in his new winter coat, but chilly. I was very pleased to see the advertisment of the Acclimatisation Society in your journal re the selling of pheasants. I consider it a wise and necessary step. I am sure, from my own observation, birds -are very scarce this year, owing, doubtless, to the number killed last year, by persons who took out licenses for profit not sport. ' * " ' —~
