Mr Oonyers is- at all times most anxious to accommodate .the public, and >to study their comfort and convenience, as much as lies , within , his, ,power ; .but, in > respect •of this application, he regrets that he cannot see his way to recommend the proposed' change, and for reasons which of course cannot be known to any one in the .absence of practical experience in the management of Railways. , I enclose, herewith a^copy of -my reply^to a letter received from the Town xClerk, Lawrence,, anddated, the 17 th. nlto. Brown, Esq., M.H.R., Lawrence. , Commissioner of- Railways 1 Office, Christchurch, 2nd May, 1978. -Sir, — I beg to- acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 17th ulto., received through the General Manager ot Railways, Dunedin, alleging the great inconvenience suffered by travellers between Lawrence and Balclutha, in consequence of the junction station being at Clarkesviile, and pointing out the desirability of transferring it to Milton. T am to acquaint you in reply, that during the year 1877, strong representations were made to the Hon. the Minister for Public Works, on this subject, and a numerously signed /petition was presented by the residents of Milton, .which received his, careful consideration, but He was unable to direct that the. proposed changes should be carried into effect (a copy of which decision is herewith annexed for your.intormation). With regard to your application of the date above quoted, X still fail to see any reason for recommending the' Minister to depart from the decision formerly arrived at.' * I have the' honour to be, Bir, Your obedient servant (Sd.) , John Mehzim. GeUtlkmen,— I am directed by the Hon the Minister for Public Works to inform you that the question of removing the junction of the Lawrence line from Clarkesviile to Milton, has received his consideration, but be is unable to idirect that- the proposed change should be carried into effect.
