SUFFICIENT inducement having keen offered the first number of the Matauba Ensjgw is now submitted to the public. The size id larger than that at first contemplated m for which we have to thank the support of advertisers, which rendered an enlargement of our plans necessary. ' ' . The Projector feeling convinced that the interests of the several Townships, and the extensive and important Agricultural, Pastoral, and Mining Districts comprised within the far-famed and extensive Mataura Valley, now demand the advocacy of a Local Press, the want of which is recognised' by all classes of the community ; has, therefore, considerable confidence in submitting the claims of his Paper to the attention and extensive patronage of the large and rapidly increasing population comprised our proposed, field of operations, believing that a well-conducted firflt-class Newspaper, properly advocating the best interests of the District, will meet with the encouragement , which its merits demand. The extensive experience of the projector in newspaper enterprise fin* nearly 20 years past is sufficient guarantee of the bona fides of the undertaking. Arrangements have been completed, which will enable us to present our readers with the current news of the week, European, Colonial and Provincial, while correspondents have been appointed in the several rising Townships within the District, so that subjects of local interest in each, may always "command our best attention. Advantage will also be taken of the Electric :Telegraph, for the receipt of the latest Borne, Colonial, Dunedin, and Upcountry intelligence. The rapidity with which settlement has re- , cently advanced over the entire Mataura Valley if equalled, has certainly not. been surpassed by auy district in the Colony whatever, nor will it yield to any locality in the variety and extent of its resources. During the past sixteen years we b»T« over »««* OTCr •£*"» traversed the Mataura, from its source in the Wakatip District to its mouth, and are thoroughly acquainted with its varied resources, capable of development, in our opinion, to *n extent now' little thought of by its most enthusiastic advocate. There are many public questions to be discussed and enterprises to be fostered and developed calculated to meet the requirements of a' young community, and hence the absolute necessity for the establishment of a local journal, that will take its stand as the exponent advocate, and pr«tector, of the residents in, their Agricultural Pastoral, Mining, and Commercial pursuits, their varied requirements being sufficiently in common to meet with due expression in the pages of the same public organ. Our special attention will ever be devoted to the material advancement of .the District, by watching over the disposal of Grown Lands, construction Of Koaas and Railway*, Administration of the Pntlie Finances, and the expenditure of Public Monies in the Di«trict, needed public improvements,' in the origination, and management of Municipal Affairs, Proceedings of the District School Committees, Mining Requirements and Improvements, with due representation in the Legislative Councils of the Colony, the revision of the entire Constitutional Policy of the Country &c-, &c, are subjects upon which an enlightened criticism will be brought to bear in the columns of the ' Mataura Ensign.' \ In short, our object will be to render the « Matauba Eksign ' in erery respect worthy of the District, and in order to carry out our project in its entirety, a yerj considerable expenditure must necessarily be incurred, 80 that to ensure success, liberal support must be awarded; we are, however, persuaded that the whole community will fully appreciate our enterprise, and that before many issues have appeared, the ' Mataujbu Ehbiov* will have established itself as a worthy exponent of public opinion, and become a longed for and welcome weekly visitor to the home of each landed proprietor^ cottager, and miner in the District. The price of single copies of the 'MataVba Ensign,' is 6d, and the subscription 24s per annnm, payable half-yearly in advance.
