The Bruce Herald. " Nemo me impune Lacesset." TOKOMAIRIRO, NOVEMBER 6, 1877.
Ir late proceedings in Parliament have not expedited the business of tbe country, they at least show an utter rottenness in the "* present condition of things '" It is a' crying ;^9§ndar tbat the fate of a Ministry -lioujd
be decided by such a trio as Mandejrs (who j is making tbe most of his short period of parliamentary life) ; a man" who goes behind his word and has the temerity to excuse himself as Mr Gishokne has done; and a political nonentity of the stamp of Mr Btjrns. j The latest telegram is, that Manjdvcjrs, through I the influence of an ex-Minister, has been pro- | vided for, by receiving employment in- the Union Steam Shipping Company's office at Wellington, and . that another wavering j member' has got, if not what he wanted, at least some, sort of .appointment. If this be trdtli, and its truth seems hot improbable, it isa grievous stain upon the honour' of the House, that its members and its majorities should, be so'bought Of Mandebs we will say no more than . that men of his stamp are beneath contempt, though, unfortunately, :' they - bring rntb disrepute the legislature of the land which should' be what Sir Geobge Grjet so. w- II terriied it— " this really august' Assembly"But we feel deeply pained that Mr Reid, representing 1 ah Otago constituency, should endeavour to obtain office at the price offered, which Is no more or' less than, a sacrifice of the honour lot' the Legislature. Even Mr Burns, much as he is under the influence of a more powerful" mind' than' his own, should endeavour for once to be independent, and try and redeem himself as far as possible from the charge of political folly. Use, no doubt breeds strange indifference, but at this last outrageous act of political turpitude a cry should 'go tip which' should resound through-' out the whole .Colony.' The disgraceful baste for office at the sacrifice of honour is now disclosed in all its nakedness, and the. exhibition is a lamentable one. We hope Mr ReidV constituents will take him promptly and sharply to task. . . , The report presented tp the. last general meet of the proprietors of the Bank of New Zealand, and which- we publish: .to. day, is, as the" directors say, of a very gratifying character A reservr fund 'isshowiv which has now been brought up to £300,000, and the > aggregate balance sheet shows a -grand total which is beginning to approximate closely towards ten millions sterling. This timej too, it should be remembered, the deposits are not swelled up by the-borrowed millions of- the Government. For an institution belonging to the second youngest colony of the British Crown the figures shown are such as New Zealand may well. be ; .proud of. . .Certainly they can he-pointed at with confidence, as- illustrating the growth of the financial institutions of this still young, colony, and .are. an indication of tbe immense business which may be .expected in years to J come.. . y ■..-... .'
