The Collingwood Baby Show
At the recent demonstration held in celebration of Collingwood (Victoria) becoming a city, a prize cup was offered to the mother, who should exhibit the best baby. Fourteen mothers, named respectively Thomas, Bryne.^ O'Neil, Aumont, Griffiths, Scott, Nevitt, Hughes, Beckford, Crush, Evans, Cross, Spry, and Raspberry, came forward with their exhibits, and being accommodated with seats in front of the bench proceeded to posture their offspring on their knees to the best possible advantage. The infants were all gaudily dressed, and about one half of them kept up an incessant squalling. The room was crowded to tha door, chiefly with the softer sex, all of whom appeared to be deeply interested in the exhibition. In due time the judges, Mr 0. Morgan (the Mayor), Cr. Walker and Mr Robt. Kershaw, arrived, and with commendable t<ict and ability proceeded with their rather delicate task. All the various points of merit and demerit of the Beveral youngsters having been duly cortsidered, the results were declared to be as follows : — Prize cup, Mrs Thomas's boy, five months old; 2nd prize, £1, Mrs Aumont's girl, eight months old ; 3rd prize, 10s, Mrs Cross's boy, ten" weeks old. The boys' 200 yardsrace, for youths under fourteen years, which had been disputed, was then run a second time in Dight's paddock, and resulted as follows :— lsfc prize, silver cup, Morgan ; 2nd prize, 10s, M'Candlish ; 3rd prize, ss, Winter; 4th prize, 2s 6d, Coghill.
