A Little Girl's Extravassgance.
The* Providence Journal ' says : — " The attention of Detectives Bwan and Waldroh was recently called to the fact that a very young girl, apparently not more than 10 years of age, and of a very bright appearance and richly dressed, had engaged a private box. at the theatre for four successive nights in one week, which she paid for herself and occupied with young companions. She was 'phadowed,' and her ways of life ascertained. They revealed an extravagance and independence unparalleled in one so young. She engaged hacks Co7)tinually, sometimes paying as much as 15 dols. and 20 do)s. per day for their hire alone, purchased fare, dress goodp, diamonds, and other jewellery with a lavish hand, and wag equally extravagant in other ways. There is an absolute knowledge that within a few months Bhe had squandered upwards of 2700 dollars. She is an heiress in*hef own right, and the moneys tfiae. obtained ,frx>pa her moihpr, who was her guardian on various pretences — one tb>t ebe was Ibe favorite of awe l ! known wealthy gentlemßn who invested it for
books at school, contributions at Sunday school, and the like. She accounted for the articles of her purchase. by saying that they were given to her by the gentleman above alluded to. The precocity of her powers of deceit, and the plausibility of her representations, were very wonderful for one so young, and her mother and grandfather were completely deceived. When the facts were made known by the confession of the girl in the presence of the detectives, they were utterly astounded. The lesson of the painful case is very evident, and the blame attaches almost in an equal degree to the shopkeepers and others who sold articles to so young a person to euch an extent without inquiry."
