Original Correspondence,

THE TOKOMAIIUIIO BItANCH KAIL-

WAY.

(To the Editor of the Bruce Meratd.)

Sir, — Some of your correspondents seetti to be under the impression that undue influence lias been brought to bear upon the survey for the Down the Kiver Kailway, which may result in causing the line to be made up Falconer's Valley, necessitating an expensive tunnel to reach the coal pit mine, which certainly looks like a line specially made for the coal pit ; while the interests of the settlers of the coast district and the owners of large coal deposits on the south side of the river seem to be ignored, as the line down the river by Ferguson's would suit all parties, aa it ia undoubtedly the most natural outlet for ooth sides of the river and coast district, -which in making a line at the public expense must be considered ; Avhile there can be no difficulty hi taking a short branch up the gully to join the Real Mackay and tne Bruce Co.'s mines, and it must not be overlooked that the line is not intended only to support a monopoly, but to open up the country generally, and to make the greater amount of coal available to the outside public, thereby increasing the trade of the district and the traffic upon the trunk line. It seems a great pity that public works cannot be allowed to be carried out without being marred by private selfishness, or sharpness, or whatever it may be called. — I ani,&c., Tiios. Murray, Shareholder Bruce Coal Co.
