Taking; a Wife obi Trial.
. 4 A correspondent of the 'GlasgowHerald ' writes : — A military man in a rural parish in the West Highlands, whose wife died last year, having got tired of single life, resolved to marry again. In the parish in which he resides are several young and rosy maidens who took his fancy. After gathering all the information he possibly could regarding their eligibility, he paid a visit to their homes to ascertain if they were of clean and tidy habits ; and having satisfied himself on these points, he asked two of them in marriage, but neither of them would consent. Determining 1 , however, not to be beaten, he proceeded to Glasgow, to endeavour to ascertain the address of a young lady to whom he was introduced two years ago. Thinking sLe had changed a good deal, ana not being quite satisfied with what he saw of her during his stay of a few days in Glasgow, he made her accompany him to to his Highland home. Many were the surmises as to the relationship of the two, notwithstanding that he introduced her to his friends and neighbours as his wife. Not a few asked the question 0 , who married them ? and where ? but to these questions he invariably gave an evasive reply. However, the matter was set at rest the other day by the military man disclosing his mind to a clergyman in the following terms : — " I have to tell you that the girl I took home from Glasgow is not my wife. I have now had trial of her for a few weeks, and I find that she answers very well. She has a nice and sweet temper, is of clean and tidy habits, and is kind to my wean ; so I have made up my mind to make her my wife."
