Political.

The present -Government has become so utterly demoralised as to be almost beneath criticism, and its existence too precarious to demand more than passing notice. "With this qualification we do no more than direct attention to one of its most recent acts in this district. It waadetermined — as we believe, contrary to the interests of settlement — to permit the whilom rebels to return to the lands they had justly forfeited by rebellion, and it was also arranged to give them a " start in life," by presents in agrioultural implements, rations, clothing, <fee, &c. So far the publio is already aware, and has probably formed a correct opinion, of what has* been done. Those " necessaries," of course, would have to be supplied by some _ merchant, storekeeper, or tradesman, and what public honesty and publio decency would require would be that tenders should be called for in- order that Jthe public interests should be consulted, and the different tradesmen treated with impartiality. A directly contrary course, however, has been adopted. One firm in "Wanganui has received a- kind -of carte hJanche to supply 'the goods, no tenders - were, called for, but the whole matter was nicely arranged by that honorable mdi- 1 vidual known as the hon. Mr M'Lean, This" disgraceful case ought to be broughtbefore the Assembly, werenot.thecorri.pt pack which constitute the Government of -New Zealand, likely to be soon divested of the power which they obtained -by corruption and hold by a series of uncon-st-itutional acts, A Creighton and a Shep* hard would have giyen respectability to sueb ■» Ministry.-—' Wangaaui, Heralds
