MILTON TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual meeting was heH in the Council Hall on Monday evening. Present— His Worship the Mayor, Councillors CapsHck, White, Murray and Marshall. The minutes of last meeting were read and approved of. The Clerk read a letter from S. Barnes.
Councillor Capstick wanted to know who was the party referred to in the letter. The Mayor said that Barnes had come to him.
Councillor Marshall thought that it was not a proper way, to sto about interfering with a matter of that kind. The specification was there, and ihe Surveyor should see to it. If Barnes had any complaint to make he should have applied to the Works Committee.
Councillor Canstick moved that the matter be left to the Surveyor. No one had any right to interfere. a Councillor Marshall seconded the motion. The Surveyor was quite competent to judge of the work-, and he was the proper party to do so.
Councillor White could not altogether relieve the Surveyor of blame. A sample block was to have been provided, and to be seen at the office. Not having it there was a neglect. Motion carried.
The Clerk laid on the table the following accounts . — lnglts, L 23 3s lOd ; tncflis and Murray, Lll 10s ; Robert Brown, L2 Is 6d ; which were passed as certified by the Surveyor, and ordered to be paid. • The Clerk laid on the table specifications prepared by the Surveyor of proposed works to be done in Manor street.
Councillor White moved that tenders be called for. to be advertised in both papers, to be sent in by Monday first, and to be decided by Works Committee. Seconded by Coiincillor Murray, and carried.
The Clerk laid on the table the Annual "Balance Sheet, Certified by the auditors. In reply to a tjnestion, the Clerk stated that he had not received any reply from the Government regarding the subsidy.
Oonncillor Marshall moved that the Balance Sheet be published as required by the Act for the information of the ratepayers, and that it be so published in both of the local papers . Councillor White Seconded* Motion carriedirT':.... '
■ 'Councillor Marshall asked if anything had been, done to abate the nuisances Cpihplained of at last meeting. , The Clerk- stated that he had issued notices, but he did not Know if anything
had been done to remove them. The Inspector had not yet returned. A desultory discussion - ensued} when, ultimately, Councillor Capstick moved that the Works Committee be instructed to examine into where the nuisances proceeded from. Seconded by Councillor Murray and agreed to.
Councillor Marshall moved that Councillor Duncan be elected to 61! the vacancy in the Works Committee, caused by the retirement of the late Councillor" Houston.
Councillor White seconded. Motion Carried.
Councillor Marshall gave notice that next meehing he would move, " That the permission granted to Mr Langley to run his sewerage - water into the ditch adjoining Abercrombie street, be withdrawn."
. .oniincillor White gave notice that at next meeting he would move, "That George street be formed and put into a passable state so as to enable ratepayers to get to their properties." He also drew the attention of the Council to the great necessity of doing something towards getting a fire engine, °r some efficient means for the extinguishing of fires, and referred to the fire tnat had taken place at Langley'sa few days ago. , Councillor Capstick observed that he had urged this same "matter on the attention of the Council a year ago. Councillor Marshall gave notice that at next meeting he would move, " That this Council take into consideration what steps are necessary to be taken for the prevention of fires.
