There has been no detailed commercial : news received later than June 16th. The business transacted in Australian securities has been moderate. Tke Bank of England Reserve and bullion are the highest ever known. Discount business has been dull at a quarter below the Bank rate. There are now numerous railroad loans and mining undertakings in the market. Wool Market. — Business during the month has been lively. Transactions mostly show-, an advance of a half-penny to a penny on May sales. Arrivals have not been so numerous as waa anticipated. Firm prices and active competition are expected. The intelligence from the manufacturing districts is satisfactory ; the mills being well employed, and stocks moderate. No advance in prices has been realised at the German Wool Fjiii-s. An import duty of 20 per cent, is contemplated by the French Government, inconsequence of which there is an increased competition in the wool market.
The tallow market is firm, there being a ready sale, with slightly advanced rates. There are about 16,000 casks of Australian now afloat. Tbe price for mutton tallow is 43s to 43s 6d per cwt., and beef, to 425.
Australian wheat is at sdz fco 623. The quantity of Adelaide sorts is not equal to former seasons. Flour is neglected, there being a large stock.
New Zealand flax is in fair request at full prices. 14,000 ! ales were offered, and onehalf sold at from Ll4 to L3O os.
Shipping. — The following are the departures for New Zealand : — William Davie, Halcione, Asterope, and Countess of Kintore. There are ten vessels loading for New Zealand.
The Hon. Julius Vogel was among the guests at the Lord Mayor's banquet on the 7th June.
No arrangements have been concluded by Mr Vogel with Mr Brogden for the construe^ tion of railways in New Zealaud. His .ne* gotiations with the Imperial Government with respect to the presence of H.M S. war ships on the coasts of the colony are said to be successful.
A letter signed "J. V." appeared in the • Times ' of the 12th June, regarding the pre 1 " judicial effect the proposed transportation of French Communists to New Caledonia would have upon the Fijian/group, and the consc -o^uent risk to the Australian colonies.
