THE DINNER
Took place in the evening at the White Horse Hotel— John Dewe; Esq., R.M., in the chair, W. J. Dyer, Esq.,. M.P.U., in the Vice- . chair. * After the usual loyal toasts, the Chairman proposed * The Army, Navy, and Volunteers,' coupled with the name of Capt Jones of the Bruce RiflesCaptain Jones briefly replied. ' Our epace prevents our giving an extended report of the speeches, so. we will briefly give an account of the toasts proposed, assuring our readers that all that ought to be said on such .occasions was said, and that every one toasted was vociferously pronounced a jolly good fellow: — 'The Successful Competitors,' proposed by Mi.Gillon and responded to by Mr J. M'Furlane, who in return proposed 'The Unsuccessful Competitors, 1 coupled with .the name of Mr Chalmers. ' Tke Agricultural add Pastoral Interests,' proposed by Mr J. M. Bryce, and acknowledged by Mr Thomas Mmr. 'The Mining and Commercial interests/ proposed by Mr K. R Jones, coupled with ttie name ot Mr'J.^L. Gillies, who replied to it. * The Judges,'- proposed by "Mr Thos. Muir, and responded to by Mr* Wilson. ' The Press,' by the Vice-Chairman, replied" to by Mr Gillon. * The fct rangers,' by the Vicechair, acknowledged by Mr Andrews. t The Ladies,' by Mr Popplewell,. and replied to by Mr E. Stewart. Ot course, several good songs were sung during the evening, and it was not till a late hour that the ploughing match festivities terminated.
