PRESENTATION TO D. P. STEEL, Esq., LATE M.P.C., FOR, CLUTHA DISTRICT.
On the retirement of Mr Steel from the Provincial Council as the representative of Olutlia, his constituents resolved to present him with the following address, and with some more substantial token of their regard for him as their representative. The sum of LSO was subscribed, and with that sum it was agreed to procure a gold watch and chain. Orders for the same were transmitted to England, and the watch and chain having now arrived, the address presented to Mr Steel and his reply thereto, have been for\varded to us for publication. We have much pleasure in publishing them. To David Pike Steel, Esq., Underwood, Ciutha. Dear Sir — We readily accept the opportunity which your retirement from the duties of a representative of the Ciutha District, in the Provincial Council, affords us to express [ our thorough appreciation of the .services yon ihave rendered to \is, during a period of four years, at considerable personal sacrifice to yourself. We have good reason to know, from one who lias been a fellow worker with you, how closely, you have had the truest interests of the Province and of the district athearb, and how unintermittingly, on Select Committees of the Council, and in lnany a quiet unobtrusive way you have •"■effectually advocated our cause and advanced our welfare.. We are not unmindful of the fact that after having retired at the commencement of the year, you assumed office in order that the district might have more time to select a successor. In requesting your acceptance of the accompanying cheque, with a view to obtaining some enduring memento of your political connection with the district, and as a partial recognition on our part of your services, we gladly avail ourselves of the occasion to express the esteem and regard which we have for many years entertained towards you personally, and our earnest hope that in your temporary retirement from public duties, you may be enabled to devote yourself successfully to those employments which more legitimately claim your attention. We remain, Dear Sirj Yoixrs very f arfch.f\illy . (Here follow the signatures.) Ciutha, Sept. 20, 1864. To Major Bichardson and the other gentlemen subscribing to the Testimonial. Gentlemen — I most heartily and sincerely thank you for your very handsome present, .and the very nattering terms in which it has been conveyed to me. I value it chiefly as the spontaneous expression of your good will and kindly feeling towards me on retiring from the position of your representative in the Provincial Council. I would take this opportunity to assure yoxi that I have not done so from a diminishing interest in the welfare of the district, but solely because my private affairs require my undivided attention. . Again accept my warmest thanks, and I assure you that your valued gift is: all the more acceptable considering the channel through Avhich it has reached me. I am, Gentlemen, Yoiirs very truly, D. P. STEEL. Underwood, S. Ciutha, • Sept. 25, 1864.
