CLUTHA FERRY.
{From our oivn Correspondent.) April 10, 1865. Business in this onr little town has been now for some time past very dull indeed, the rush to the Grey river having affected this as well as the surrounding districts. It is a matter of congratulation amongst the farmers heie that this rush did not take place until the whole of the harvest, or, at any rate, the greater part, had been taken in. The crops here are, on the whole, remarkably good, and the farmers have cause ro be thankful tint the weather throughI out the whole of the harvising reason should have been so favorable to them. Ib. lieve that, with the exception of some farms on the Kaihiki, the fanning season for this year has drawn to a close. To-day there has been quite a change in the weather. Yisterdaj- was veiy close and sultry, hut t -day the wind has bern blowing very hard indeed ; in fact, so much so that the punt across the river has with great difficulty been worked, and the steamer Tuapuka, wliit-h is lyin-i here, is not able to leave for Port A'iolyneux. We have had also during the day some heavy showers of rain, which, if it has rained at all up tlie country, will make the river rise considerably. At this moment it is as low as it possibly can be. On Friday' evening we had the pleasure oi a visit from Mr Dyer, one of the candidates for the representation of the county of liruce in the House of Representatives. He held a meeting i:i the Resident Magistrate's Court, at eight o'clock, which was well attended. Mr A. MNeili was voted to the chair, who, after making a few very appropriate remarks, introduced Mr Dyer. Mr Dyer, after thanking the electors for their attendance, said that he considered the most important question, and, in fact, the question upon which all the candidates were going in upon, was ' Separation,' and on that subject bis opinions were very strong indeed. He s;dd that every province in New Zealand was financially iusolvent, and the cause of it he at" tribnted to the immense departmental expenditure, which was about LIOJOOO to. much. At the present iime there was one General Assembly and twelve Provincial Councils, each at a cost to the count rj> equal to the cost of one. Government, if there was one for the North Is and and one for the Middle. He also adduced a good many more strong reasons why there should be sqw ration between the two. islands ; and alter slightly touching upon other points of interest, arid answering a number of questions, it was proposed, seconded, and carr.ed that Mr W. J. Dyer was a fit and proper person, &c. And now, leaving politics, I will turn to. amusements. We are to have the pleasure of bearing Miss Aitki-n give one oi her readings onSatu day evening ne,\t, and it is looked t'osv ward to impatiently, as, being sufarfroin. Dun-, edin, anything like intellectual amusement is. to be seen or heard very se dom A new hotel is about being finished for Mr 11 Smith, v\hioh, when it is opened, will be as <»ood an hotel as you v ill see out or Dunedin, I also hear that some private bouses are to be built shortly, so that there will be some stir here soon. The traffic on this rond at this time is very quiet, but very few drays passing or repassing, which makes all kinds of business dull. There is to be a s--ile of fat stock and horses here on Wednesday next, an account of which I will forward in my next }$tt<??. *•.
