ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
Our. Correspondence Column is at. all times open ot tho temperate discussion of questions of public interest ; but we do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our Correspondents In no case can anj' letter be .inserted unless accompanied by the real name and address of the writer, not necessarily for publication, but as f>" guarantee of good faith. ts? (To the Editor of the Bruce Herald.) Sir — I find a report of the proceedings at the Nomination for the Bruce Election from ihe pen of the ' Daily Times' Correspondent. and puhli-hod in that j mrnal of 4th inst., of a very unfair character as re.ards myself. lam reported to have said that in the matter of Separation I was undecided Such is not the case, as the opinions expressed in my Address to the Electors, published in the ' Daily Tim's' of 3rd inst.. and wuioh I requested to be published iv your issue ot this week; are opinions I ha^e held for years, and therefore had no occasion to be ihe hast undecided in the matter, and such were the vieAvs I expressed on the hu-tings. In answer :o a question about the Land question I rcfu-ed to pledge myself, as I said it was lolly fur any candidate to pb'dge in a matter of detail, as when he got. to Wellington he might have to work out oVtai's very differently. The point wkere I was undecided was whether it would be now a wise course or otherwise to open up the land to free selei tion. I have all along been a strong supporter of the restrictive clauses in>he Land' Regulations, as I am quite aware of the pood results that has followed from such a course, but that in our unfortunate monetary position ii might become a necessity. I also refused to pledge on that point; hut nor, on the matt< r of Separation. I hop*-, Sir ihat your report of the proce diii.s/ in this weeks issue will not be a garbl- d one, but by giving a fair report of what was said by thr. various candidate? the elctors may be enabh-d to "udee lor themselves of the me rite of the various 'speeches. The Correspondent of the 'Daily. Times' had no excuse to write such a ivpo.it, as
I am sfromrlv of opinio" that he was present Hull ring the whole proceedings aial unless his notes were destroyed h» had no excuse to write such an account, as he wa« apparrit y not inatfiitive to what was r/oink on. But if the gentleman who asked me s- roam questions with such force and ability be the reporter in question I need not be Furprised at his living such a report of my remarks as his mind was not capable of being impressed with am thing beyond the limits of its boundless capacity. . By inserting the above you will oblige, Your obedient Servt., A. J. BURNS. "Fortr-street. Duriorlin i ___j_A-lU-J-i-^-^---: I
