NEW SPELLING.
Mr. William Archer has given a clear and complete explanation of the tinis and objects of the simplified .Spelling Society. Mr Archer never does things by halves. He is convinced that spelling reform is necessary ; and he is, therefore, in the most uncompromising way a nyu speler. In a recent article on the subject he explained that iu the immediat fyuetyur, the soesiety hum xu mam objects—(l) Tu organ io-z cdyueaishonal opinion in faivor ov reform; (2) to enlieten the public mien on the subject and accustom the public ie tu a form ov speling which at least acheeve it in the best conseevahle wai. If, when the public miend is sufishentJy edyucaited, a mor radical reform iz clezierd, this speling wil maic wai for-its suescsor without any trub'i. That, therefore, is what In; call "aul riot." ! Mr. Archer realises/ though, that we may hesitate to turn our typewriters to this new system. People will ask, he admits, "Whi inflict upon us, at this tiem of dai, the anoians ov a nyu a-nd uncouth spelling?' To begin with, ho answers, it would save 'edynchishon tiom." On this point aul authoriti/, ar agreed. Sum plais the waist ov tiem at mor than a veer, no won estimaits it at much les. And tiem mienz lief; and this waist ov lief iz going on, veer out, veer in, from jeneiaishon tu jeneniishou, whairever the English langwaij is spoecen. From every point ov vyu, in fact, as he points out, the absurdity ov the cm rent speling involv very seerious detriment tu the mental efishensy ov our rais. The obvious difficulties, too, that suggest themselves may easily be brushed ashicle. Mr. Archer goes on : The speling 1 am yuozing inevitably givz a shoe to the acustomd ie ; but to a generaishon acustomd to it from youth upwerz it wil giv no shoe, and it wil pozes the oenly byuety ov which speling iz caipahl—naimly, the gyeuty ov fitness for ts purpos. Aul ov which eonvinisiz us that wee hav, for yeers past, treeted the lait Artenuis Ward with les consideraishun that hee deservd.
