VARIOUS STATEMENTS. LONDON, April 19. The Titanic seemed to break suddenly in two, and sink instantly' according to the statement of one passenger. It is impossible to say what occurred aboard after the survivors left. Mrs. Candee, of Washington, had both legs broken in getting into the life boat. She states that most of the men saved were picked up after they had plunged overboard, and declares that Major Butt, President Taft's chief aide-de-camp, and Colonel Astor, the well-known New York millionaire, died like heroes. . NEW YORK, April 19. According to the story told by one of the passengers, Captain Smith shot himself on the bridge. The officers had previously wrested a revolver from him in the library. The captain broke away, dashed to the bridge, and shot himself through the mouth. * The chief engineer also committed suicide. Three Italians were shot dead in the struggle for the life boats.
