NOTES.
'it needed a disaster to bring tile public to a sense of their own powers. The disaster has porno, appalling enough in all conscience. Tlio marine monster in the world lies at the bottom of the ocean, and only a fractional part of her human freight remain to toll the awful talc. Ts it not time'to end this mad competi" lion of speed and size, and cutting off cornel's and taking short cuts ? The only way to end it is to make the owners personally jointly and severally liable for disasters of this sort! Tt is all very well to hold a marine inquiry and cancel the certificate of a skipper. But he is only the owners' executive, and <loos as ho is- bid. Lot us hope Parliament will now take drastic-ac-tion.
"Traveller" writes to the I'ahiatua Mora Id. a letter on the subject- of tho Dannevirko-Makuri Road, in which lie relers to "tho disgraceful condition of that portion ot the road between the (,'ooncor school and .MeKenzie's. The state ol this part of tho road beggars description. It is nothing but a series ol ruts and crevices for a distance of miles, and is absolutely dangerous for vehicular traffic." We are able from personal knowledge to endorse the remarks of '"Traveller" on this subject. and also bis further reference to the dangerous crossing at MeKenzie's. which continues to exist, although money for bridging it was placed on the estimates last session. Wo trust tho member for tho district will soo to this.
