THE DEFENCE SCHEME.

[press association.]

WELLINGTON, This Day

Sir Joseph Ward to-day .made a statement to a Post reporter (respecting the registration! which lias been 1 expected under the defence scheme, and' refuted an allegation emanating front- the Peace Conference in London that the scheme had "been afailure, inasmuch as large numbers had been refused to register. Sir Joseph Ward presented for publication a report by General Godley, which, gives the figures of those liable according to the census to serve and the actual registrations effected under the defence scheme. This shows that more men of ages from 18 to 21 registered than are shown by the census return as 'liable for registration. In brief, the Defence Department is only aware that 53 persons have refused to register.
