AN AGGRIEVED UNION.
[VIIESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, Tins Day. Before commencing proceedings at tlie Conciliation Council this morning, one of the representatives of the Carpenters' and Joiners' Union, Mr J. liarras, stated he had been instructed by the union to bring before the council the matter of the Dominion newspaper making comments, in the shape of a leading article, upon some of the business which has still to engage the attention of the council. He referred to and read that newspaper's comment respecting the utterances ot Commissioner Halley, having reference to the claims for wages and hours, and said he considered it unfair that a newspaper should have commented in the manner it had. After some discussion, it was agreed by -a majority of the council present that the matter should be referred to the Labor Department by letter, asking them to take the necessary steps to rectify the occurrence. The representatives of the employees voted on one side, and the employers' deputies on the other, and the commissioner decided the matter by voting with the former. On Friday last, Avium the dispute AA-as first heard, Mr Rally said he considered the claims of the union for a Aveek of 40 hours, and an increase of Avages from Is 4d to Is 8d pea- hour, were u.iweaso liable.
