CRICKET.

SOUTH AFRICANS v. TASMANIANS. Press Assn —By telegraph—Copyright HOBART, January 23. The return match between South Africa and Tasmania ended in a draw. A feature of to-day's play was the fine free innings played by both Nourse and Snooke, who practically did what they liked with the bowling. The stand made by Windsor and Eltham for Tasmania was a brilliant effort, and staved off what looked like certain defeat. Strieker added four to his overnight score of 84, and was then bowled by Windsor. Nourse and Snooke then got together, and the latter had scored 88 before being caught off Windsor's bowling. Nourse was not out for 112 when the innings was declared closed, with the score at six for 430. When stumps were drawn Tasmania, who wanted 413 to win, had lost six wickets for 216.

Eltham 51 and JWindsor 83 were the principal contributors.

NEW ZEALAND TOUR ABANDONED.

[press association.] CHRISTCHURCH, January 23. Mr F. C. Raphael, lion, secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council, has received a cable from Mr Fitzgerald, manager of the South African cricket team, saying that he regrets it is impossible to arrange for the South Africans to visit New Zealand.

NOTES BY "MID-ON."

Cricket, matters have been rather slow in this district, during the past week. The only match put down lor decision, Makotuku v. Dannevurk© B, was postponed. This week, lioiwever, what with Mr Board in oust midst and the fact of three matches being fixed for next Saturday, wiiUL be a deaided change. The matches .are at Onriondvilile (Norsewood v. Or'nioiidville), and at Waipukurau (Dannevirke A v. WaApukura.u), in the senior grade-; and High School v. Danmevirke C, a.t Dannevirke, in the junior grade, tat it is not likely that the latter match will be played, owing to the boys being away on their holidays. Chief interest will be taken in the Waipukura.u fixture. T'ho members of the home team can generally manage to put a fairly strong team in. the field on their own ground, and, I understand, they are straining every effort this time to avenge theim defeat at the hands of Dannevirke rim the first round, and to stop theiir vietorious career.

The Omio'ndville-Norsewood fixture mlay result' anyhow. Norse wood is such an uncertain team this year, pantting on a splendid score one match, 'and going to pieces for no accountable reason the very next. Ormondviille ha.ro a long way to pull up on the match in 'the first round, when, for the loss of one wicket Norsewood beat them by about 100 runs, but they may repeat their performance- of last season, when they were successful' in twice downing their old antagonists. I have an .apology to make the Dannevlrko Chib. In my motes previous to Last I made the statement that tihe A team had no right to play members of the junior teams, tihe 13 and C, in their team. When writing those notes 1 was' thinking of a rule to tihe effect that w|hen a club has two or ainore teams entered for the same competition these tea,ms shall ha constituted quite distinct from each other and there '.shall 'be no interchanging of piaj-ers. I overrooked the fact that in this case the players were promoted from a junior grade. My attention has been drawn to this error, hence the correction. It sh.CH.ild be remembered by the Dannevirko Club, however, that these juniors must not ,he -played mx two consecutive matches or three matches at intervals or they will ibo considered senior players, and will forfeit their right to play in the junior ranks. Additions to registered players : Dlanneriirke Club, B team: J. Bott, Herbert and Jensen, the "last two being transferred from the High School list. C team.: H. Knight. Ma- Board's itinerary has not yet been quite settled after completing the present time-table set down for Dianiiievirke .up to Wednesday evening. It is prpbable, however, that from. Dannnevirke, Mr Board will go to Waipukuraai on Thursday and then back to Ormioindville for Friday, wilier© lie will coach the Oirmio-nidvdllle and Norsewood school boys in tihe morning, and the men of those places in the afternoon. The reason for these arrangements is that a gymkhana at Norsewood and the Caledonian sports on Thursday are likely to p' re vent a good attenidiain.ee of players from the two latter places on either of those days. The arrangements should be definitely made a ; n,ct be published to-morrow, 'by which time an, answer should come from Waipukurau as to whether Thursday will suit them.

[Since writing these notes word has ooinie to the effect that Waipuku.rau cannot get sufficient ipLayers to meet Mr Board, so other arradngements will have to' be made.]
