SOUTHLAND WOOL SALES

[press association.] IXVERCAIiGILL, Jan. 23. The second wool the series was held to-day. The total bales offered numibered 13,738, of wihieh 3196 were passed. The greater part of the withdrawn, tots were station, clips, which owners expressed their determination to consign to London rather than accept the reduced .prices offered here. The* usual buyers were present, with tlie exception that Amtelrieans Were not represented. Southland 'buyers entered largely into thle competition, and wero actively comeerned in, maintaining better prices than would have otherwise been current. Crossbred wood formed the greater pairt of the catalogues, and with wn average drop of Id pier pound as compared with last month, .growers had to be content with about 3d per pound less than in January of .'last year. The Jack of American competition, had a. decided bearing on t'heise results, more particularly in iregaird to hogget wool. At no time was the competition very animated, except for the better 'lots. Bellies and pieces (which were- a feature of last month's sale) dropped quite 2d per lib. Hogget wool averaged BJd to 9£d, extra good up to lid. Ewe wool aver age o! 7fd to 8-} d, a. few lots up to 10£ d, with inferior .ranging down to od. Inferior ■ woods suffered the greatest drop. Of the finer grade of wools Murray, Koberts and Company purchased a. fair quantity for a Dominion manufacturer. As against the top price of 13-J-d last January, lljd was the best price to-day. Though some drop was .anticipated-, growers are ratlicr downcast at the result of the sale. The quality on the whole was inot so good as last year, fleeces' being earthy and station clips infested with -biddy-bids through tho weed having ripened earlier than in previous years.
