TENNIS TOURNAMENT.
THE DANNEVIRKE TOURNAMENT. The annual tournament held under the auspices of the Dannevirke Tennis Club was opened on the club's courts this morning. Fortunately the weather was fine, although dull, and as the various games are well contested by the foremost players of the Dominion, the games should be more than usually interesting. The players present this year include Mr H. A. Parker, an ex-New Zealand champion; Mr C. C. Cox, ex-N.Z. champion; Mr Olliver, present holder of the Canterbury championship ; Mr H. W. Brown, a well-known Wellington player ; Mr F. M. B. Fisher, M.P., who with Mr Peacock holds the N.Z. double championship, and winner of tile Hawke's Bay singles championship at the last Dannevirke tournament. Prominent among the lady players ■are Miss Travcrs, holder of the N.Z. championship; and Miss Nunneley, for 13 years champion of N.Z., and who defeated Miss Travers at Blenheim a few days ago in the Marlborough Provincial Tournament. The courts are in. fine order, considering the prolonged dry weather, and Mr Faliey (the caretaker) is to be complimented upon their condition. The attendance during the day was especially good for the opening rounds. The games are being played off without delay, Messrs Bickford (president) and Rowe (secretary) are keeping the tournament going without any hitches. The standard of play is likely to be very .liigli, and by to-morrow should be very interesting. This morning the game between Messrs F. M. B. Fisher and Rowe and Messrs Swainson and Druce, was a line display of tennis, the former winning on the advantage set. • MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. H. W. Brown defeated J., E. Marshall, 6—3, 6—o. .
