Preliminary reports of tlie vital statistics of JN'.S.VV. for 1909 show the population at the end of last 3'ear was 1,6-15,444, being an increase of 40,535. Marriages numbered 13,048, or 8.03 per thousand, being the highest recorded for 22 years. Births numbered 43,769, or 26.94 per thousand. The deaths were 9.75 per thousand, being the lowest rate on record, and 9 per cent, below the mean record of the past ten years.
