The Eltham Argnis states that enquiries ha.ve been received by the Stratford School Committee from Daiinevirke with reference to the local baths, as it is proposed to construct baths at the Dannevirke High School. The election for the position of two representatives lor the Borough of Dannevirke on the Hospital Board is being held to-day, but as was anticipated not a great deal of interest is being shown.- in the event. Up to 3.15 about 64 votes Irad been cast at the Borough Council Chambers a,nd 124 at the Library. The poll will be declared at the Library, by Mr Magnusson, the returning officer, shortly after six o'clock. Nothing could better illustrate the changed methods of prison treatment than the efforts that aire made to instruct and amuse the■ unfortunate inmates of gaols, as well as to discipline them (says the Sydney Daily Telegraph). Lectures, .missions, and services of song are held in the gaols at different periods, in some oases as frequently as once a month, and these are highly appreciated, as the prisoners strive for the privilege of /attendthem. For the 'lectures, such subjects were chosen Hast year as "Faust," "Conscience and Character," "Oratory," "Travels in South Africa," "Botany," "Indian Mutiny," "Coal and its Products," "London," "The Depths of the Sea," "Some Crises of the British Empire," "Wit and Humor." At the services of song, which were frequent, large parties of ladies and gentlemen, in some cases numbering 30 and 40, gave their services. Missions were conducted by Protestants and Roman Catholics, the latter being very attentive in this oonncctioni. Writing with respect to these lectures and addresses, the Deputy-Controller says that it would be difficult to overestimate their value. The lectures and the services of song are always well received, and they are a powerful stimulus to good conduct, as only prisoners with a .satisfactory record in gaol are allowed to attend.
