RAUMATI.
At a meeting of the School Committee held on the 17th inst. it was decided to hold the picnic on the 28th at the Manawatu river. Given a fine day the outing ought to prove very enjoyable and we hope to see a large gathering of both young and old at this the first school picnic held in Ilaumati. Parents and friends will kindly provide refreshments for the occasion. Mr Finlay, the newly-appointed teacher, hails from the staff of the Napier Boys' High School, and has very high credentials, and parents are to be congratulated on securing his services. This appointment dates from March 1. The late rain will prove very beneficial to farmers in the way of feed, but those who have not been able to finish haymaking and others who are grass-seeding will be somewhat delayed. The grass-seed crop promises 'to be a good one, some of the cocksfoot being 6 feet high. Mr Wiss, the "water diviner," was very successful in the way of locating springs on most of the sections, and far mors are still busy sinking at the present time. One settler was rather disappointed after sinking 64 feet to be told by Mr Wiss he would not get water. I understand Mr Claridge has his milking machine in going order, and is very well pleased with the work it is doing.
