The results of the British elections are now coming to hand, and for the next ten days will form the principal topic of interest arriving over the cables. The polling for the boroughs is given in this issue. Although there has been apparently a considerable turn-over of votes, the net gain to the Conservatives is not particularly extensive. Mr LloydGeorge has felt it necessary to hearten up his supporters with the declaration that to secure a Liberal victory it was not necessary to win every seat. This is evidently in reply to the assertion that the first results show a loss to the Liberal cause. As a peculiar instance of the difference in views held by individual towns, it may be pointed out that Manchester has voted . Liberal, while in Birmingham, where Mr Joseph Chamberlain is evidently not by any means regarded as an "extinct volcano," the voting has been solidly for the Conservatives. A perusal of the figures will show that the majorities in many instances are singularly close, and a few votes one way or the .other would have considerably altered the returns. It is quite too early to speculate on the ultimate result, but unless the country constituencies should show a predominate vote, it does not appear that Mr >Balfour's party will receive sufficient support to enable them to form a Government, although it is possible that the ranks of the Conservatives may be largely reinforced as the outcome of the elections, as the outcome of the elections. The following is the state of parties as shown by the returns: BOROUGH RESULTS. UNIONISTS ... 35 LIBERALS 30 LABOUR ... 5 From the Unionists the Liberals have so far gained four seats—Great Grimsby, North-west Manchester and Plymouth (2). The Unionists have captured in all nineteen seats from the Liberal and Labor parties, viz., Cambridge, Penryn and Falmouth, Brixton, Gloucester, West Wolverhampton, South Wolverhampton, AVednesbury, Ful-
ham, Rochdale, Konrungton Division of Lambeth, Devonport (2), Bath (2), Rochester, Salisbury, Burnley, Southwest Manchester (a three-cornered contest), and Stalybridge.
