WAIKARE WRECK.

CAPTAIN NEWTON'S CERTIFICATE RETURNED. [PRESS ASSOCIATION.I DUNEDIN, January 13. The court of enquiry into tlie \Vaikare wreck delivered their decisiou to-day. The court found that Captain Neuton exercised every care in navigating the vessel in Dusky Sound; that the vessel was fully equipped; and-that tlie vessel struck on an uncharted rock. The court expressed the opinion that no blame whatever was attributable to the master in respect of the disaster. The court placed or record the splendid achievement o 4 ' Captain Newton, and the discipline and and promptitude of the office 's and the order shown in lowering boats, placing passengers safely :u them, attending 1 to tlieir comforts, and afterwards in doing their utmost to save the vessel, and the prompt, manner in which the Union Company despatched a relief steamer to the scene of the disaster. The court returned the master's certificate. PROMOTION FOR APPLEYARD. DUNEDIN, This Day. The Union Coy. has promoted Mr Appleyard, second officer of tlie_ Waikare, to first officer, in recognition of his services in the launch, and the members of the crew with him are to be given monetary grants. The stewardesses, Miss Gash, and Miss Fitzpatrick, assistant, are to be promoted. Captain Newton is a passenger for Auckland by the Monowai to-day.
