A memorial to the bluejackets of the warship Encounter, who lost their lives in the harbor disaster last year, through collision with the steamer Dunmore, has been unveiled in Rook wood cemetery. . (Received January 14, 10.35 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. Arrived.—Melbourne, from Kai'para. A three-year-old child at Donald was found to have drank a pint of wliiskv. The child is dead. The manager of the Orient Company has had a conference with the Postmaster-General, and made final arrangements for the new mail contract, which comes into operation, on February 11. The company accelerates the speed of the steamers between Adelaide and Westraiia, and equips its steamers with wireless apparatus as soon as the stations at Fremantle and Sydney have been established. The injured gunners are progressing satisfactorily. The gun was an old one, and had been at the fort for years. It is suggested "the accident was. caused by the lock becoming defective through wear. A board of officers has been appointed to enquire into the mishap. Lord Kitchener has expressed regret at the disaster. The steamer Manawatu is ashore at Anderson's Inlet. All hands are safe The chances of refloating are doubtful.
