Small birds are giving orchardists around Palmerston a considerable amount of trouble. Blackbirds are the worst offenders, destroying great quantities of fruit (says the Standard). An apple-grower in the borough has found the ordinary "gin" rat trap most effective in capturing these birds, securing a dozen or more in a day with two traps. He baited the traps with pears.. At this time last year orchards were over-run with the little '/white eye," but up to the present this season scarcely any of them have been seen about.
