RUSSIAN COUNT SENTENCED.
THREE AND A-HALP YEARS FOR MURDERS. One- oi' tlio iiio.si remarkable cases iii the liistory of the Russian criminal law terminated at Odessa on April 5 in the passing of a sentence on Count K. Szibor JYlarchotzki for the murder of his wife. Countess Helena, and his. two daughters, Countesses Eugenie- (aged twenty-four) and Augusta, (aged seventeen).' Many and protracted adjournments on various technical pleas, extending . over a period of nearly three years, had delayed the prisoners arraignment, public opinion being greatly aroused thereby. All .three victims were shot dead in cold blood. Th.ere had been somo domestic imhappiness owing to the Count's relations with his wife's maid. The murderer is a barrister and a "wealthy landed magnate, having high social influence. The defence set up the plea of insanity, and the prisoner was sentenced to three and a-hal-f years' imprisonment. The lenient sentence, attributed lo the Count's position, lias created an enormous sensation hero, and is publicly denounced as a miscarriage of justice. — Central News.
