[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] ROTORUA, last .night. Evidence at th«. inquest regarding the Putaruru accident showed that trucks of timber were being drawn from the Totara Timber Cb.'s mill to the railway statio.ii. The -horse Avas going at a. trot and the driver was I standing on tho buffers behind tlie horse. He saw some children on the line, and called out to them. Some of the children went off the lino towards the road, but the little, girls Collier went' to tho opposite side of tho line and endeavored to save themselves by standing close to a timber "skid. The truck in charge of tho driver was on a down grade and tho brake was at tlie opposite side, of truck .to the driver, who had no control. Before reaching the children the driver jumped off and ran to the back of the. truck, and put the brake on. It was too late and the truck came in contact with-tho children who were crushed in the chest. An examination by Dr Stewart five mini utos after proved that the- accident was fatal. The driver's view was obscured by trees. A verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame ,being attached to anyone. The girls were -aged .12 and 14 years.
