HERBERTVILLE.

« ♦ [OWN COEEEBPONDENT.] Competition for the banner is very keen this year, and so far honours are fairly evenly distributed between Wai-nui, Wallingford and Poranga-ha-u. Wainui played Porangahau at Porangahau on Saturday. ' Both teams were out to win, find both had their full strength on the field. The game was fast and open, which naturally delighted the spectators. In the, first spell through a moment's careless play, Wainui allowed Porangahau to score a try. which should have been easily prevented. Waimarama failed ' with the kick. "After this the ball travelled briskly up and down the field, neither side scoring any appreciable advantage. In the x second spell after a series of forward rushes, Wainui were rewarded with a try — Somerville touching town near the corner. Grant did not increase the score, the ball rolling over as he essayed the kick. From this on the game became very "willing," both sides narrowly missing scores. ' Porangahau attacked vigorously towards the close of the game, but sound tackling by Wainui prevented -them 'Scoring. There Mas no further score, although the visitors' forwards looked dangerous on more than one occasion. . The game resulted in a draw, three points each. The game although it was fast and open, was confined mainly to the forwards. Porangahau had considerable advantage in weight, but the Wainui pack held their own splendidly. r For Porangahau Waimarama, Sargisson and Fearnley played well, while Somerville McNinch and Grant did good work for Wainui. Next Saturday Wallingford play the local team, here, and as Wallingford won the last time,- these teams met, the game should bo a capital one and well worth witnessing. This is rather an important fixture, and the cZestinatkm of the banner will • probably be decided by this match. Hitherto the teams in East Coast have competed for a cup. Thisyear, however, Mr T. J. Callighan, Porangahau, has presented the Union with a magnificent banner. The new departure is a good one, as the banner remains the property of the Union, and this encourages the competing teams to have their names inscribed on it as often as possible.
