THE OPENING. Full particulars •concerning thesifce, position, and architecture of tho new Salvation Army hall have already appeared in these columns, but yesterday's proceedings marked another distinct stage in the history of this- aggressive movement in Dannevirke. Colonel Knight, accompanied by the provincial secretary, Staff-Captain Orames, arrived by the morning train, and inspected the building prior to the opening eereinony. At * 2.45 .p;m. a representative crowd had assembled -in the main street, where proceedings were enlivened by the /music of the well-known capable in- . strumentalists of the local branch. . Shortly after 3 '"o'clock, Colonel Knight commenced the opening cere-., niony by outlining a well-known hymn, in which the audience joined heartily. ■?•'■■ ■ ' Staff-Captain Simms was then called upoii to engage in . prayer, after which the Colonel made reference to the manner in which the funds were raised, tie faithful work executed by Foreman Thomas, the substantial building which graced the locality, and voiced the thanks of the local branch to all who had contributed, and thus made it possible to erect such a prepossessing and solid office. His Worship the Mayor, on account of ill-health, was \infortunately unable to attend and peform the opening ceremony, but this duty was ably fulfilled by the Mayoress, who in wellchosen words expressed deep pleasure at being present and in. turning the key and pronouncing biiilding open, gave expression, to the hope> that God may be glorified within its walls. ! Within a few minutes every seat I was filled inside. On every hand were heard expressions of admiration and the main building itself, ite accessories, and the renovations in connection with the hall at the rear <to be used • for the training of >the yvxmg, appeared to give entire satisfaction. During the course of the Inside meeting; Colonel Knight made reference to the Arniy^s system of financing its building schemes, and also paid a tribute to the work in connection with this scheme of his predecessor, Brigadier Albiston. and of Adjutant Thurkettle. - The Rev. Wesley 4Jriffin spoke on behalf of one of the "Army's sisters" — the Methodist Church, expressing great pleasure at being present and' conveying the good wishes of the denomination he .represented to the Army in their labors in this town. The speaker hoped, that the time would soon come when, revivals similar to those witnessed in other parts of the world would break out in Dannevirke. Staff-Captain Simms, in charge of the local forces read "several letters of apology from his Worship the Mayor, and others, after which an offering-was-taken up, primarily to meet the expenses "connected with the finishing off of the inside furnishings." A • large number afterwards sat- down to tea in the Drill Hall At 8 p.m. Colonel Knight conduct- ' eda special meeting in the new hall, at whioli were present quite a number of officers and adherents of the Salvation Army for many miles - around. The musical items included a song by Mr H. L. Cartwright, "The Great Amen';; duet, _ "Watch and pray," by Captain and Mrs- Botheras, of Woodville ;' and a duet by two lady officers, which were all much appreciated. The band, under Bandmaster Harold Scotney, greatly assisted by their excellent music the enjoyment of all present. During the evening, and in addition to others, Lieut. Caporn received promotion to the rank of captain.
